An MP for the Bibiani-Anwhiaso-Bekwai constituency has lashed out at Ghanaians for swerving the e-levy tax after it was passed, stating that the citizens have betrayed the government in its efforts to provide good roads for the nation.
According to Alfred Obeng Boateng in an interview on Oyerepa TV, Ghanaians immediately stopped using mobile money transactions as soon as the e-levy tax was passed by the government. He stated that such behaviors have contributed to the government not being able to provide the good roads it promised the people.
He also revealed that some people devised crooked ways of sending money by using merchant numbers to transfer the money so they do not have to pay the tax. According to him, such behaviors have not helped the situation in the country at all.
Alfred Obeng stated further that if the citizens had accepted and paid the tax, the government would have been able to generate the funds it needed to undertake developmental projects. He also stated that although the e-levy would not solve all the problems facing the country, it would have still done a lot.
The MP also took time to blame the minority in parliament, accusing them of polluting the minds of the people against paying the e-levy tax. He later admitted that the government also failed in communicating the huge benefits of the e-levy tax and how it would have helped with the nation’s development to the people before passing it.
