Sanctions Over Unregistered SIM Cards Begins Today

Less than 1 minute Minutes

The sanctions on SIM cards that have not been registered by their owners are due to start today Monday 5th September 2022. These SIM cards are expected to begin facing punitive actions from today onwards

In a document sighted from the National Communications Authority, re-routing of outgoing calls from unregistered SIM cards in which special messages are played will be the beginning of the punitive actions against such SIM cards.

Some people will also find their SIM cards blocked with the only thing being special messages being played for them to listen to for two days. However, these actions will not include permanent blocking of the SIM cards while still within the month of September. This will be aimed at giving unregistered SIM cards further chances to get their SIM registered before the month ends.

According to the sighted document “subscribers who fully register their SIM cards within the period, they have been blocked will only be unblocked by the MNOs after the 48hours to avoid the MNOs tampering with their systems intermittently”

Permanent blocking of unregistered SIM cards is expected to begin after September has ended.

The number of people who visited various offices to get their SIM cards registered is said to have dropped by 98% after the last extension of the exercise which was supposed to end on July 31st. Only 5,861 people registered their SIM cards and completed biometric capture. This was a far cry from the 235,000 people who registered before the extension was announced.
